The battle of Chickamauga was fought on September 19 through the 20 1863 it marked the end of the Union defensive in Southeastern Tennessee and Northwestern Georgia it was called the Chickamauga campaign.
The battle was the most significant Union defeat in the western theater of the American Civil War. The battle of Chickamauga was a bloody bloody campaign, many soldiers died it is the second highest casualty rate, the first being of course The Battle of Gettysburg.
This is one of my favorite historical spots. It goes on for what seems like forever, there is so much to see that it is impossible to get it all in on one trip. It would take weeks to be able to see it all to experience it all. I've been there over seven times and I've not seen it all. I have severe adult scoliosis so I walk with a cane and sadly its impossible for me to visit a lot of the spots because there's a lot of walking and trails and rough terrain if you want to visit everything.
This great battle was fought by two fronts. The Union side Army of the Cumberland under Maj. Gen. William Rosecrans and by The Confederate Army of Tennessee under Gen. Braxton Bragg.
The Army of Cumberland had over 60,000 members the Army of Tennessee had 65,000 members that participated in this battle. The casualties and losses of the Army of Cumberland 1,657 was killed, 9,756 wounded, 4,757 captured or missing never to be found.
The casualties of the Confederate states of Tennessee 2,312 killed, 14,674 wounded, 1,468 captured or gone missing never to be found. That is one of the horrible and sad deals this battle many of the bodies just remained where they fell and overtime was buried in unmarked graves. Many workers groundskeepers find items such as tags and bones.
This is Wilder Tower, below picture shows inside. Wilder and his men and Regiments from Indiana and Illinois armed with Spencer 7-shot repeating carbine laid down a barrage into the advancing Confederates forcing them to retreat. This tower was to be a monument on the bravery and force and stance of Wilder and his Men, it started being built in 1892 but stopped due to money. It was funded by Wilders own men. It is said the men took Wilders objects and cemented them into the Tower. It was complete in 1899 and was officially completed in 1904 with the staircase inside. The height is 85 feet tall. There are legends behind it such as it being haunted by Wilder and his men.
